Are Gambling Poker Players a Thing of the Past?

Poker had often been portrayed in films and in soap operas as a game played by degenerate gamblers in smoke-filled underground clubs who are only happy when gambling poker hand after poker hand and betting huge sums of money and offering their house or car keys as collateral. Whilst some of those images may used to have been true, the day of the gambling poker player is now a thing of the past, with today's modern players not even referring to poker as being gambling at all.

There has been lots of study into strategy and how to approach the game since poker become mainstream and many of the top players are now more professional in their work. Players now practice bankroll management instead of putting all of their money on the line in one game and they are far more disciplined and well versed in pot odds, implied pot odds and expected value. Gambling poker this is not, skilled poker this most certainly is.

Are there more gambling poker online players?

Some people would describe a loose-aggressive player as someone playing gambling poker but this is not the case. A true loose-aggressive player will give the impression that they are gambling and splashing around in pots but when the big money goes in they will almost always have the good. This is a trademark of a top loose-aggressive player.

Compare that to loose-passive players, those who are very weak players and are always gambling poker online. Instead of showing any aggression during a hand they will just be gambling poker online hoping to hit miracle cards regardless of the action in front of them. They are affectionately known as fish and are an online poker player's favourite opponent type.

Although the general style of play in a live poker venue will be loose-passive there is a high percentage of people playing nothing but gambling poker online. This is because they do not have to face the person they are playing so they can call raises or potential bluffs without looking stupid in front of their opponents. Also, some people struggle to realise that real money is at stake in these games because it is only a graphical representation on the screen, leading to playing more poker online.
