No Limit Holdem is the most popular poker variant played in the modern world. Each and every day there are literally millions of people playing the game in either cash game format or in the various types of tournament both on Ladbrokes Poker and in live venues around the globe.
Little is known about the invention of the game Texas Hold'em but it is widely accepted as being created in Robstown, Texas back in the early part of the 1900s. It was then introduced to Las Vegas but players were slow to take up the game and it was only played in a fixed betting structure, but in 1971, the year of the second-ever World Series of Poker, it was decided that No Limit Holdem would be the format for the WSOP and from there No Limit Holdem started to gain more and more followers as it was an exciting game that generated plenty of action.
Doyle Brunson, who won back-to-back WSOP Main Events in 1976-77, described No Limit Holdem as being the Cadillac of Poker, a term that was used in the popular 90s poker film Rounders, starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton.
The No Limit Texas Holdem Boom
No Limit poker underwent a massive surge in popularity in 2003 when the aptly named Chris Moneymaker won the $10,000 No Limit Texas Holdem Championship for a cool $2,500,000. The reason for the interest in Mr Moneymaker was the fact he had won his seat to the WSOP Main Event through an online satellite tournament that cost just $33.
Moneymaker's victory saw thousands of players try to emulate his success and the online poker boom occurred. From that day No Limit Texas Holdem became the game of choice for the majority of poker players and television companies began producing large-budget shows highlighting how exciting and profitable playing Texas Holdem could be.
Although when it first became popular, No Limit Holdem was mainly played at a full nine or ten-handed table, recent trends show that the most popular way to play No Limit Texas Holdem is at the short-handed cash game tables. Online poker sites, such as the excellent Ladbrokes Poker, offer short-handed, full ring and heads-up versions of No Limit Texas Holdem so however a player wants to play the game, they will always be able to take a drive in the Cadillac of Poker.
