Double up STTs are relatively new but a very popular format of single table tournaments. Unlike other STTs, half the players will get into the money and as the name suggests double their buy-in. For example in a 10 person, €20 Double Up, the bubble will be at 6 players and when the 6th person is out, the game is over and everyone has won €40.
The first thing to note, is that these are much tighter; in fact the tightest games online. Most of the time players will only play very good hands, but you will also get a few players who have no clue of the format and bust out in 3 hands like any other. The bubble is usually very very slow because of this.
Unlike other STTs, chip accumulation is not a priority, survival is. If you can get to the bubble with the stack you started with, that’s not bad at all. If you double your stack early there is no reason to go looking to make it much bigger, because whether you end the tournament with 1 chip or 10,000, you will go home with the same prize. For this reason it’s a cardinal sin to call all-in for your tournament life on or near the bubble without a very very strong hand, in fact there are times where it can be correct to fold pocket aces.
The great thing about Double Up STTs is they are very low variance, so the better players should find themselves in the money most of the time.
