Rebuy tournaments are very popular online. The difference between them and normal tournaments is that within a certain time period, usually the first hour, players can opt to buy back into the tournament if they bust out. The net result is that the action is much faster and the prize pool gets much bigger.
The first thing to be aware of is bankroll as rebuys have different requirements. If you play $25 MTTs, this does not mean you can play $25 rebuys because you have to buy-in multiple times. A good rule of thumb to go by is that you should play rebuys that are one 5th of your normal buy-in. So if you play $25 MTTs, you should play $5 rebuys, because your average spend will be around $25.
The rebuy period is the time to build a big stack. Unlike normal tournaments where you do not want to risk your tournament life on a silly hand, in rebuys you can accumulate a massive stack very early because the action is so loose. Expect to get paid handsomely when you have the goods and don’t sit on your stack trying to survive. Be prepared to gamble much more for a big stack because you need one to do well after the rebuy period.
After the rebuy period there will be so many more chips in play than in a normal tournament after the same period of time. You will have a much deeper stack and these times are profitable because all the crazy gamblers will have no idea what to do with a big stack. Being proficient at cash games will help enormously right after the rebuy period, because they are also deep stack games. After a while, the dynamics of the tournament revert back to what you would be used to in a standard freezeout.
