Satellite Tournaments

Entry to another, bigger tournament

A satellite is a tournament where the prize is.....entry to another, bigger tournament. If you want to play a big tournament but don’t want to stump up the money, try winning your seat via a satellite. You can win satellites to bigger online events and even live tournaments, you can even play satellites into satellites and qualify for huge events for tiny sums of money. Chris Moneymaker famously turned a $40 satellite win into a $2.5 million score at the WSOP and since then, millions of players have tried to replicate him.

There are essentially two types of satellites, one with one seat on offer and one with multiple seats. When there is only one seat on offer you need to play for the win, as if you are playing a normal tournament, because its winner takes all.

Satellites with multiple seats on offer are much more like Single Table Tournaments, in that there is an element of survival needed as you get close to the money. Check out our guide to Single Table Tournaments for more information and in particular, the Double Up STT information, because the bubble of a satellite is the same as the bubble of a Double Up, everybody gets the same prize and it’s more important to get over the line than it is to have all the chips.
